Saving Knees and Backs in the Kitchen

No matter how much you plan ahead and how happy you are with your "dream kitchen", there is always something new that comes along later.  Instead of buyer's remorse, use it as an opportunity to get in the shop and make some sawdust!

A few years ago, some close friends had their kitchen remodeled.  While the latest, shiny appliances always catch my eye, one feature I thought was a "must have" were the full extension shelves they had in their lower cabinets.  I always find myself struggling with retrieving heavy pots & pans or glass casserole dishes - especially ones near the back of the cabinet.  Many times, I find it easier to kneel on the floor so that I can partially unload items making room to retrieve the item I had in mind.

This month I finally had the opportunity to make good on my promise to build a few of my own.  Retrofitting my cabinets was actually easier than I had anticipated.  With some careful measuring and readily available full extension slides, I was able to complete a bank of three in a little over a weekend.  You can find a drawing with dimensions I used in my cabinet  here.  Have a look for yourself:

Those watching closely may notice different kitchens between the beginning and end of the video.  In actuality, I made the shelves as a Christmas gift for my parents.  It's always hard to find a gift for selfless people who never ask for anything.  Turns out, making their lives easier was a good choice.  They new shelves are a welcome addition in their kitchen.
